Gerry Gillett Perpetual Trophy

The Gerry Gillett 4-club stableford competition was played on the Tuart Course on 6 December 2019.  The winner was the Trophy’s donor, Gerry Gillett with a score of 88 off the stick, 69 net, 37 points.  The photo shows Richard Russell (left) presenting Gerry Gillett (centre) with his own trophy.  On right is past-president Doug McCauley.  In winning, Gerry beat his age yet again, this time by 5 shots – he is a sprightly 93-year-old!  Best gross of the day was Tom McClain with 86.

Jock Oehlers Match Play Competition

Mike Spencer is the John Oehlers Shield matchplay champion, defeating Graham Guy 6 and 5 in the final, played on the Old Course on 16 March 2020.  The photo shows the two finalists (Mike on the left, Graham on the right, with club president Richard Russell) on the first tee of the Old Course at Wembley. Preliminary rounds commenced on 17 February with 29 members competing for the Shield.  Mike’s path to get to the final involved defeating David Connor, Alan Smith, Garth Irvine and Ian Webb.  Graham had a bye in round one so his path was shorter but involved beating David Hayes, Brian Hills and Gerry Gillett.  Congratulations to the finalists and particularly to our new champion, Mike Spencer.

Cecil McPhee Trophy

The Cecil McPhee Perpetual Trophy (commonly known as the Cesspot) was won on 7 August 2020 by Grant Saunders with a score of 33 points.  It was won on a count-back from 5 other club members – Tom McClain, Garth Irvine, Adam Zieba, John Campbell and Rick Lazar.  Twenty-two players competed for the trophy on the Tuart Course, on a fine but cool day when wind and green speed made putting difficult, scores were close, and pars and birdies rare.

The Cecil McPhee competition is played using medal stableford scoring – 2 points for a par, 3 for birdie, 1 for bogey and minus 1 for a triple bogey or worse.  The result is then determined by adding handicaps to the point score.  Cecil McPhee was a founder member of the West Coast Golf Club in 1973 and played well into his nineties and passed away at the grand old age of 101.  Grant’s round was marked by a birdie on the 15th (par-5), 3 pars and several excellent long-range putts.  He played off a handicap of 16 and scored 17 points with 11 off the second nine, giving him the lead over the others in the count-back.

Pairs Championship

The Pairs championship was played over two days on a combined score basis.  The first day’s play was on Friday 18 September on the Tuart Course with the second day played on Monday 21 September on the Old Course.  Winners were Tom McClain and Barry Boyd.

In the photo, club president Richard Russell congratulates the pairs champions Tom McClain (centre) and Barry Boyd (right), who won their championship on Monday with a score 137 stableford points after 36 holes (combined score).  In second place were Mike Kimbar and Rick Lazar with a score of 135 points.  Tom and Barry had a comfortable lead of 9 points after the first day’s play with Tom scoring 38 and Barry 37.  However, Monday’s play saw Mike and Rick close the gap with Mike scoring 37 points and Rick 29.

Annual Club Championship

The club championship was played over two rounds – the first on Friday 23 October 2020 on the Old Course, and the second on Monday 26 October on the Tuart Course.  Both rounds were played under mild sunny conditions, with the courses in good condition.  Alan Smith was the leader after round one with a superb round of 79 gross, 64 net, beating his age by 4 strokes and the closest competitor by 5 strokes.  Alan could not maintain the pace on Monday and finished second in the club championship to Darren Lloyd, whose 84 gross on Friday was followed by 83 on Monday.  Alan scored 89 on Monday.
In B Grade, Bruce Morrison was the clear leader of the field on both days – 90 on Friday and 96 on Monday, beating Graham McHarrie into second place – Graham had scores of 95 and 98.  Alan took out the handicap championship after his outstanding Friday round of net 64 and net 76 on Monday.  President Richard Russell and David Lynn were close behind with combined nets of 141, and they were followed by Mike Spencer (143), Graham McHarrie (143), and John Stone (145).
