2024-5 Trophy winners

Fred Sorenson Shield – 29 November 2024

The Fred Sorenson Shield is an ambrose competition – 17 players competed for the trophy on the Old Course on 29 November 2024, in advance of the annual general meeting.  Four teams, one four-ball and 3 three-ball, had gross scores less than par, but an outstanding performance of a team comprising Garth Irvine, Bruce Morrison and Barry Boyd proved the winner – they chaulked up 6 birdies against just one bogey to give them a net 67.  Second place went to a four-ball team of John Campbell, Richard Russell, Steve Huckle and John Allen who scored 5 birdies against 2 bogies for a net 69.

Gerry Gillett Perptual Trophy – 20 December 2024

Gerry Gillett recently announced his retirement from active golf just 83 days before his 99th birthday.  The 20 December 2025 marked the ninth occasion on which the club has competed for his trophy – the Gerry Gillett 4-Club Stableford Perpetual Trophy.  Gerry presented his trophy to the trophy competition winner, club president David Hayes.  In the photo below are (left to right) runners up Ray Parry and Stephen Edmondston who both scored 35 points, with Gerry Gillett presenting the trophy to David Hayes the winner with 37 stableford points.  Gerry told us the origin of the trophy – he started playing golf in 1937 with just two clubs but soon acquired a couple more which served him well for several years.  He believed then that 4 clubs was quite enough and he often wondered why golfers needed as many as 14 clubs in their bag.

President’s Trophy – 26 March 2025

The competition for the President’s Trophy (stroke nett) was played on the Old Course on 28 March 2025 in unseasonably hot conditions.  The best recorded score on the day was Rolfe Heldt who shot a gross 80 for a net one-under-par 71.  However, Rolfe realised later on in the day that he had scored 5 instead of par on the 18th making his gross 81, and he advised the captain.  After some debate because he would have won anyway if he had recorded the correct score on that hole, it was decided that he had to be disqualified for submitting an incorrect card under the rules of golf.  Accordingly, the trophy was awarded to Tony Fisk who also shot a gross 81 for a net 73.  Second place was Ray Parry with a gross 97, net 74 and third captain Tom McClain with gross 85, net 75. Afterwards, members enjoyed a BBQ at the secretary’s home.

Jock Oehlers Matchplay Championship – April/May 2025

The match play championship was played on Mondays 28 April, 5, 12 and 19 May 2025.  The number of members entering the competition was disappointingly less than usual and the timing of the match play will be reconsidered for 2026.  However that is not to detract from the performance of the entrants and in particular the winner Alan Smith who takes the Jock Oehlers Shield home for the 5th time – he first won the event in 2005 and to win it again 20 years later aged 87.9 is truly creditable.  Ron Bensky provided stiff competition in the final with the pair even after 17 holes and Alan winning by a single putt on the par-3 18th hole. In the photo, Alan is presented with the shield by captain Tom McClain with Ron Bensky on right.  The match play ladder is attached.
