Last week, Gerry Gillett announced his retirement from active golf just 83 days before his 99^th birthday.  Today marks the ninth occasion on which the club has competed for his trophy – the Gerry Gillett 4-Club Stableford Perpetual Trophy.  Members will be asked to approve the award of life membership to Gerry at an EGM to be held on 16 February 2025.  Today, Gerry presented his trophy to the trophy competition winner, club president David Hayes.  In the photo below are (left to right) runners up Ray Parry and Stephen Edmondston who both scored 35 points, with Gerry Gillett presenting the trophy to David Hayes the winner with 37 stableford points.  Gerry told us the origin of the trophy – he started playing golf in 1937 with just two clubs but soon acquired a couple more which served him well for several years.  He believed then that 4 clubs was quite enough and he often wondered why golfers needed as many as 14 clubs in their bag.

We received an email from Golf Australia during the week, announcing a number of changes to the handicapping system which will come into effect when Golf Australia switches from the current Golflink software to the new GolfConnect software.  The transition process is being worked on in conjunction with Miscore and other scoring systems used by clubs and the timing will be announced on 29 January.  It is expected that there will be a period of disruption to normal scores at the time.  For those interested in the technicalities of handicapping, the email provides more details of the sort of changes expected.

Today’s scoring was challenging.  The Wembley Golf printer failed, so many of us had to score using the pre-printed cards.  Accordingly, we had to load the scores to Golflink manually and the attached scoresheet from Golflink does not identify count-back order. 

Par competitions often result in lots of countbacks and when we did the count-back for second, we overlooked John Allen’s score which was even on both nines.  He should have won the count-back for second place because each of John Stone, Bruce Morrison and Ray Parry had -1 on the second nine.  Bruce had a birdie on 15 and was even on both the last 6 and the last 3, so came 3^rd after John.  Ray was even on the last 6 but -1 on the last 3 so came 4^th after Bruce, whereas John Sone’s -1 was on the last 6 so he came 5^th.  He needs to hand his prize to John Allen and Bruce can keep his 3^rd place. – the scorers apologise profusely!!
