Gerry Gillett Perpetual Trophy – 4-Club Stableford

The Gerry Gillett 4-club stableford event is competed for annually close the Christmas under normal stableford rules with the requirement that members carry only 3 clubs and a putter in their bag whilst playing in the competition.  Gerry Gillett announced his retirement from active golf just 83 days before his 99th birthday in December 2025.  He joined the club in 1996 and for many years was the club’s auditor only handing over that responsibility in 2022. He was the club’s open champion in 2018, he won the club ‘B’ grade champion on three occasions, the Cecil McPhee trophy once, the Fred Sorenson on several occasions and of course he has donated the Gerry Gillett 4-Club trophy and won it himself once.  Gerry told us the origin of the trophy – he started playing golf in 1937 with just two clubs but soon acquired a couple more which served him well for several years.  He believed then that 4 clubs was quite enough and he often wondered why golfers needed as many as 14 clubs in their bag.  Coincidentally, Gerry is also a champion grower of gerbera flowers, winning many Royal Show awards with his prize specimens.
