Jock Oehlers Match Play Championship Shield

JOCK OEHLERS MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP SHIELD–
COMPETITION RULES

To be eligible to win the match-play championship, players:

  • need to be fully paid-up members of the club.
  • must have played a minimum of 10 playing dates with the WCGC in the Club’s current season ie: since 1st November annually.

Entrants to the match-play competition will have recorded their intention to play on the nomination form included within the booking sheet at least one week prior to the start of the qualification round used to limit participants in the match-play competition to a round of 16 players (Round 1).

The qualification round is stroke net and the selected players for Round 1 will be those who have submitted the best stroke net score during Monday or Friday’s competition in the week preceding the start of the match-play competition.  If necessary, normal count-back rules will determine the 16 players eligible for the competition. Members playing on both Monday and Friday must nominate in the booking sheet which round they intend to submit for qualification with discretion being given if either day is a wet day.

To enable members who can only play on Monday or Friday to compete, the match play competition will have one round per week over 4 weeks.  There will be a random draw for the competition held after golf on the Friday preceding Round 1.

To accommodate those who are unable to play on specific Mondays or Fridays, members, when nominating, can say whether they can play only on a Monday or Friday.  When the draw is done, all the Monday-only players will be placed at the top of the draw and all the Friday-only players at the bottom in such a way that no Monday players are playing Monday players (initially) and the same for Friday players.  The random draw is then carried out matching flexible players with those already placed.  In this way no Friday player can meet a Monday player until later on, possibly the Final.

Apart from any pairs containing Friday only players, all other matches must be carried out on the Monday of the appropriate week, and the remaining pairs containing Friday only players must be carried out on the Friday.  If a player fails to arrive on time on the appropriate day for any reason, he forfeits his match.  If both players fail to show the Match Committee will toss a coin to see who proceeds to the next round.  If a Friday and a Monday member happen to meet in the final, they must try to agree Monday or Friday in the Final week.  If they cannot, but agree to play on any other day in that week they must inform the Captain.  If they cannot agree, the competition is declared void and there is no winner for the year.

Matches are decided by holes won on the basis of net strokes taken to complete a hole.  When it is obvious that he cannot halve or win the hole, a player is permitted to concede that hole to the opponent.  Handicaps, as adjusted by the handicapper after the conclusion of play on the Friday before the start of Round 1, will apply to the Match Play Competition without change throughout the competition. Handicaps appropriate to the Old course will apply for Old course matches, and those for the Tuart will apply to Tuart course matches.  Only one player is to make a handicap adjustment, e.g. if the first player is on a 22 handicap, and the second player is on a 16 handicap, then the first player gets a one stroke advantage on the six holes having an index of six and under.  If both players are on the same handicap, then neither of them has any advantage and they play off scratch.

Members should familiarise themselves with the Rules of Golf and Club local rules to enable them to resolve questions of penalties or procedures of play that may arise in the course of a round.  A sincere attempt to resolve such matters should be made by members of the group at the time of play.  If, however, a playing group cannot resolve a problem, the matter shall be referred to the Match Committee.   Once the Match Committee is involved, its decision is final.

In the event of a tie in the early rounds the winner is determined by count-back.  The winner under count-back will be the player with the greatest number of holes won in the second 9 holes. If players are still tied, the count-back will be on the last 6 holes, then last 3 holes and if still tied by counting back from the 18th.

In the event of a tie in the Final, the match is to be replayed on the next convenient playing date as agreed between the finalists.  If agreement between them is not reached, the Captain will decide the replay date.  Existing handicap strokes apply to the replayed match.  There can be as many cycles of replay as the finalists agree, but if these do not determine a winner, the winner is determined by count-back on the original 18 holes.
