Gerry Gillett Perpetual Trophy
The Gerry Gillett Trophy 4-club stableford competition was played in cooler conditions on 10 December 2021, after 40 degrees earlier in the week. Overcast at the start, the sun came through at the halfway point. Whilst some of the field struggled with using their chosen clubs in unusual circumstances, others remarked that they didn’t know why they carried round 14 clubs for the rest of the year when 4 seemed quite enough for a good score. The winner, John Allen, played a consistent round to head the field with 68 points, closely followed by Grant Saunders 36 points and Richard Dongray 34 points.

Jock Oehlers Match Play Competition
18 members entered the competition for the Jock Oehlers matchplay championship this year with the draw done on 21 February, the qualifying matches played in the week ending 4 March, the round of 16 played in the following week, quarter finals in week ending 25 March and the semi-finals between Tom Guthrie and John Stone (2 up), and Tony Fisk and Mike Spencer (3 & 1) played on 28 March.  The final was delayed until 26 April by mutual agreement.  After a close fought tussle, with the lead changing several times, the players were even as they approached the 18th.  John Stone hit the ball with the toe of his 3-wood high into the trees to the right of the tee whereas Mike Spencer played his shot towards the gap but into the trees on the right.  John had to play out onto the fairway in front of the big tree and promptly hit his third shot into the trees.  Mike’s second shot put him across the fairway with a good opportunity to play onto the green – he failed to do this and needed a fourth shot to get there. Meanwhile John’s fourth got out onto the fairway and his fifth landed beside the green down the slope on the right needing more than the two shots Mike took to hole the ball and conceding the match by a putt. The final was played in good spirit and with a lot of good shots as well as quite a lot of not-sos reflecting the pressure of competing for the match-play trophy and a voucher worth $100 from Endeavour Hotels as a prize, these going to Mike Spencer.

Captain’s Trophy
The Captain’s Trophy was played for on 22 April on the Tuart Course in perfect autumn conditions under sunny skies.  Congratulations to both Garth Irvine and John Allen for their fine rounds resulting in a one-over-par net of 71.  Garth won on count back whilst Richard Dongray came in third.  The photo shows Garth holding the Captain’s Trophy Shield with Captain Mike to his right, flanked by John Allen and Richard Dongray.

President’s Trophy
The President’s Trophy was played for on Friday 10 June 2022 on a stormy day with threatening clouds but very fortunately very little rain during play.  The Old Course was in excellent condition but the greens were tricky – hard, fast and unforgiving for those heavy-handed golfers in the club. For what was forecast to be a wet morning, we had a good turnout of 17 members to compete for the trophy. Congratulations to a comparatively new member, Ian Johnsen who won the trophy and a $100 voucher from Greenwood Tavern with a gross 91 and net 73.  Three players tied for second place with a net score of 75 – Graham Guy took the money and six-pack Coronas on count back with a gross 93, followed by Mike Kimbar (89) and Alan Smith (91).
The photo of the president, Richard Russell, presenting the trophy to Ian Johnsen, was taken indoors at 300 Acres after we had to move because of rain whilst the results were being determined.

Cecil McPhee Trophy
The Cecil McPhee Trophy competition was held on 12 August 2022 under warm and sunny winter conditions. Twenty-four club members competed for the trophy under stableford off scratch rules.  The winner was Captain Mike Spencer who achieved 36 points with a gross score of 83.  The runner-up was Tony Fisk with an excellent round of 72 off the stick but collecting three penalties for playing the wrong ball to bring his gross up to 75 and his points to 35. Third place went to a recently-joined member, Rolfe Heldt, with a gross 85, net 73, 33 points.  The photo shows Barry Boyd (right), recently retired as vice president, congratulating the winner, Mike Spencer (left).

The Ray Dale Perpetual Trophy (Pairs)
Ray Dale Pairs Championship
The Pairs Championship was held over two days, Friday 16 and Monday 19 September, both days’ play being on the Tuart Course. Friday’s weather was sunny and warm but Monday’s started with a heavy shower and followed up with sunshine and strong winds, we being lucky to avoid further rain. Over the two days’ play, the clear winner by six strokes was the pair of Grant Saunders and Tom Guthrie – many congratulations on a best ball score of 89 for the two days.  Runners up were Mike Kimbar and Steve Parkinson with 83, followed by Garth Irvine and Ron Bensky with 78.

Annual Club Championship
The club championship competition was played over two fine generally sunny days, 21 and 24 October 2022, on both courses at Wembley Golf Complex.  Friday’s play on the Old Course saw Captain Tom McClain heading the leader board with 83 gross, 71 net.  He was followed up by Alan Smith with gross 87, Garth Irvine 88, John Allen 89, Mike Kimbar 90 and John Stone 90.  Handicap leaders at the conclusion of day 1 were Tom McClain, Alan Smith and John Allen all with net 71, from Barry Boyd 72 and Garth Irvine 73. B Grade leaderboard was headed by Barry Boyd 97 from Tom Guthrie 99 – there were only three entrants for that grade which the committee will need to address.  Monday’s play on the Tuart Course saw Tom McClain claim the A Grade championship with a gross 87 (combined 170) whereas all his followers from Friday scored in the nineties.  Carl Colli had an excellent round scoring gross 84 (combined 175) to force his way onto the leaderboard and claim second place from three players with a combined gross of 180 – Garth Irvine, John Campbell and John Allen, who claimed the handicap championship with a combined net of 145, one shot better than Steve Parkinson on 146.  Meanwhile, Barry Boyd was unable to defend his B Grade lead which passed to Tom Guthrie with a combined gross of 196.  Full scores attached.
