Cecil McPhee Trophy 2020

The Cecil McPhee Perpetual Trophy (commonly known as the Cesspot) was won on 7 August 2020 by Grant Saunders with a score of 33 points.  It was won on a count-back from 5 other club members – Tom McClain, Garth Irvine, Adam Zieba, John Campbell and Rick Lazar.  Twenty-two players competed for the trophy on the Tuart Course, on a fine but cool day when wind and green speed made putting difficult, scores were close, and pars and birdies rare.

The Cecil McPhee competition is played using medal stableford scoring – 2 points for a par, 3 for birdie, 1 for bogey and minus 1 for a triple bogey or worse.  The result is then determined by adding handicaps to the point score.  Cecil McPhee was a founder member of the West Coast Golf Club in 1973 and played well into his nineties and passed away at the grand old age of 101.  Grant’s round was marked by a birdie on the 15th (par-5), 3 pars and several excellent long-range putts.  He played off a handicap of 16 and scored 17 points with 11 off the second nine, giving him the lead over the others in the count-back.
