Gerry Gillett recently announced his retirement from active golf just 83 days before his 99th birthday. The 20th December 2025 marked the ninth occasion on which the club has competed for his trophy – the Gerry Gillett 4-Club Stableford Perpetual Trophy. Gerry presented his trophy to the trophy competition winner, club president David Hayes. In the photo below are (left to right) runners up Ray Parry and Stephen Edmondston who both scored 35 points, with Gerry Gillett presenting the trophy to David Hayes the winner with 37 stableford points. Gerry told us the origin of the trophy – he started playing golf in 1937 with just two clubs but soon acquired a couple more which served him well for several years. He believed then that 4 clubs was quite enough and he often wondered why golfers needed as many as 14 clubs in their bag.
